Primary Care Residents Benefit From Breast-Feeding Course Curriculum linked to improved practice patterns, knowledge, higher breast-feeding rate

Jul 6, 2010

Few medical schools teach about breastfeeding in any detail. Doctors' skill in caring for breastfeeding mothers and babies is closely linked to their own personal experience with breastfeeding. Those who have breastfed, or whose partners have breastfed, tend to be more knowledgeable and give correct information. Clearly, all doctors, not only the ones with personal breastfeeding experience, should be competent to help breastfeeding mothers and babies in their care.

A new breastfeeding curriculum for medical residents (see article) was shown to greatly improve doctors' knowledge and practices. Patients who were cared for by the breastfeeding-educated doctors were much, much more likely to be breastfeeding at 6 months. It really does make a difference to have healthcare providers who know about and support breastfeeding!
